Back in Studio with Dancer Maddie

The studio is finally back open and I was happy to get back to it with long time collaborator Maddie. Maddie is in her last year at the O’Neil Academy of Dance. We played around with some different lighting and poses and got some great pictures. After a couple of months of not shooting my timing wasn’t razor sharp, but we managed nicely. I uses a lot more one and two light setups than I normally would for dance.

Fitness Photosoot with Eric

I had a great photo shoot with Eric last month. He was in great shape and was really nice and vascular. Eric ate more on set than anyone else I had seen. He brought a banker’s box full of good foods. It worked and he realy filled out during the shoot. Eric is train by Tim Love.

Dance in the Rain 2.0

This time setup went much faster and smoother. No pipes broke on setup, so it was a good morning. I had lots of different dancers, all different ages and styles in that day and even one of my fighter friends. Assisting on the day were Kevin and Rebecca.

Long Exposure Dance Shoot

I had an opportunity to work with two young dancers from the National Ballet School of Canada. We decided to play with some long exposure photography. I had a lot of fun with these talented dancers.

Kids Portraits

I know this is a big shift in gears for me, but I really enjoy working with kids. I was a scout leader for years and even did some foster care work in the past. One of my clients brought their child with them to a shoot and we decided to get some portraits of them on a whim. The photographs turned out great so I started to more sessions with kids. I’ll be posting future work to @londonontarioportraits as well as on this site. These have been a lot of fun to shoot and if you would like formal portraits of your child, please just message me.

This young man has style and chose out his wardrobe for his portrait.

Bodyscapes on the New Camera (NSFW)

With the new camera I had to ditch the 150mm-500mm lens I was using for my bodyscape work. I wanted to see if I could replicate the process with my much shorter 105mm lens. The results were okay. (The model was great) I did fight the auto focus a bit and the 105mm is a little short for my liking. Here’s some of the images below. I may experiment a little further with it or I might wait to get a longer lens. Images below are not safe for work.

Some Practice with the New Camera

One of the things that I need to do with a new camera, especially one that is so different from the ones I’ve owned before, is to get a lot of practice in. I like to be able to change settings without looking at the buttons and to operate it by touch and muscle memory. I’ve been practicing with a bunch of different genres and situations since I got the camera last month. I went to a workshop put on by The Production Studio so I could practice without worrying about producing any usable images. The model for the workshop was the very experienced and talented Phylactère. I did get a number of images I’m really happy with.

New Year, New Lens

New Year, New Lens. I picked up the Sigma 105mm F1.4 Art lens. I wanted a portrait lens in the 85mm - 135mm range and was looking at a lot of information. No review had anything bad to say about the 105, which is rare as a lot of the technical reviews really pick equipment apart. I tested the lens out at the gym and it performed really well, beyond my expectations. What a great lens, sharp at F1.4. The only drawback is the 3.6 pound weight, but I have a monopod for that. Once the monopod was attached it was easy to work with. It might be my favourite lens I’ve ever owned, certainly the best. I’m not usually a gear guy but this lens has me excited.

*Product pictures are from Henry’s where I purchased the lens. Go see Avan at Henry’s London South.

The tripod collar makes a world of difference.

The lens hood is a thick piece of plastic that screws into the lens.

Sparring at Warriors

I decided to take my new lens for a spin yesterday. Sigma 105mm F1.4 Art lens. What a great lens, sharp at F1.4. The only drawback is the 3.6 pound weight, but I have a monopod for that.Once the monopod was attached it was easy to work with. Always fun shooting at the home gym (Warriors Boxing)

Dance Photoshoot with Abi

Dancer Abi from O’Neill Academy of Dance came into the studio this week to help me test my new camera setup. I’m still getting some shutter lag, but I am working out the timing. Abi was great and gave me some really dynamic and powerful moves.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Mirrorless

A week before Black Friday, my wife informed me she want to buy me a new camera for Christmas / Anniversary. Being not stupid, I said okay and off to Henry’s we went. (Side note: If you’re in London, ON visit Avan at the Henry’s South location, he’ll take care of you) As a Canon guy I immediately thought about the Canon 5Dmk4, a great upgrade to my current camera(s). It was on sale too. I had it put aside for pick up the following week.

I got talking with Avan over text and he suggested I check out the mirrorless offerings from the different companies and specifically Sony. I did a bunch of research and then went back to the store a couple days later to play with the Sony’s hands on. They were smaller and had a weird menu system that makes no sense to anyone, but the performance was good. I shot in one of their back rooms at ISP 6400, brought the image into Lightroom, zoomed in times 3 and could read the text off the shelf tags. I was sold, it had great low light performance and an AF system that was supposed to be top notch.

I decided on the Sony A7R3 body and Tamron 28-75 f2.8 lens as a starting place.

I’ve watched hours of video and read a lot of articles to try and get up to speed on the new system. So far I’ve shot some pro mma, a pet / owner portrait session and some portrait work with a model. I’ll be shooting a dancer and some fitness work this week on the new system. I’ve been really impressed with the face and eye auto focus. Now that I have those optimized I’m looking forward to a lot of tack-sharp images.
